Don Carson

Don Carson was trained as a commercial illustrator; his work has branched out to focus on the design of physical and virtual spaces. Working as a Senior Show Designer, and freelance contributor to Walt Disney Imagineering, Don’s job is to communicate design through conceptual sketches and 3D models. This work has expanded to include everything from designing entire lands for the Disney parks to guiding teams of designers as they build 3D environments in virtual worlds and 3D games. Don is currently the Sr. Art Director at Mighty Coconut, creating attractions to be experienced in VR.

Tia Kassim

Sozo

From the juror: Tia Kassim’s design presentation successfully explores many facets of the themed environment design process. This is done through deep research, site exploration, storyboards, digital and physical 3D models, and fabrication documentation. Tia successfully articulates her concept through a diverse collection of techniques all of which are valuable for communicating her concept to the wide range of disciplines that will ultimately be responsible for making her design a reality.

Jetta Gerdts

 Children’s Wellness Center

From the juror: Jetta Gerdts’ presentation is tight and consistent throughout her exploration of all aspects of the environment’s design. Leaning towards a more traditional interior design document Jetta shows a flair for communicating her concepts while sticking to a cohesive color palette that pulls the spaces together. Insets referencing specific details communicates her dedication to research with real world samples. Her renders are clear with the addition of avatars placed for scale without overwhelming the spaces. The images transport the viewer into the concept leaving little question that this project is absolutely do-able as depicted.

SAMA-BAJAU Float Design

From the juror: This project captures the fun and energy that can be had through a group collaboration. The research is thorough and the reference to cultural designs and traditions is playful and fun. Best of all these design choices are pulled together into a physical paper model that successfully communicates both the potential and build-ability of this design as a physical parade float.
